Unveiling the story of the world's rarest red diamond.
The Moussaieff Red Diamond is recognized as the largest internally flawless red diamond ever discovered. Its rare "Fancy Red" color grade, impeccable clarity, and brilliant cut make it one of the most iconic gemstones in existence.
In the 1990s, the diamond was discovered by a Brazilian garimpeiro (manual miner) in the Alto Paranaíba region. Initially, it weighed 13.9 carats in rough form. Its intense natural red color caught immediate attention.
The rough stone was later cut by experts into a 5.11-carat triangular brilliant (Trilliant) shape. It was polished to bring out maximum fire and brilliance while preserving its rich red hue.
Red diamonds are the rarest of all natural colored diamonds. Unlike pink or blue diamonds, red ones derive their color from atomic lattice distortion — not from impurities. The GIA classifies only a handful of diamonds as “Fancy Red”.
This diamond is graded as “Internally Flawless” (IF), meaning it has no visible inclusions under 10x magnification. Combined with its red color and precision cut, this makes it a gemstone of legendary status.
The Moussaieff Red Diamond is estimated to be worth over $20 million USD. Its value continues to appreciate due to its unmatched rarity, historical significance, and collector demand.
This diamond has been displayed at elite exhibitions, including the Smithsonian Institution’s “The Splendor of Diamonds” collection. Today, it remains mostly in private viewing, preserved as a priceless gem.
